He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and came with his father, in the early years of the 1800s, to Kittanning, Armstrong County, where he was a successful merchant for many years. He was originally a democrat, but finally became a free-soiler, and served as one of the early sheriffs of this county. He also held various borough offices, was a prominent business man.

He and his wife had five children: one son and four daughters.
