General Notes: Husband - Maj. Alexander McDowell
His family was among the earliest white inhabitants of Venango County, PA, and his father acted for many years as agent of the Holland Land Company. He was appointed Prothonotary and Clerk of the several courts, Register and Recorder of Venango County, by Governor Ritner, in January, 1836, which office he held for three years. About the same time, he received from the Governor the appointment of Major in the militia of the state, which position he filled for many years. Major McDowell, like most of the early pioneers, was a man of iron constitution and genial ways. At the last, he was sensible of his approaching departure, and died in the hope and consciousness of a better life. [HVC 1879, 488]
McDowell's Bank was the successor of the second banking institution of Sharon, established by D. C. Strawbridge May 1, 1868. In March, 1870, James Bleakley, Son & Co. bought the Strawbridge Bank, and began a general banking and exchange business, with a financial basis of $100,000. Mr. Bleakley withdrew from the bank in 1873, and his son-in-law, Alex. McDowell, the previous “Co.” of the firm, took full charge, and thereafter conducted its operations. It had a capital of $100,000, and did its full share of the banking and brokerage business of Sharon. Its quarters were in the substantial brick block owned by the I. O. O. F., on the corner of State and Vine Streets, and its financial standing was recognized as substantial as the block it occupies. [HMC 1888, 401]
At his death, he left his wife and ten children.
