At his father's death, he inherited the homestead farm, located in Mt. Pleasant Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. On this farm, he spent his entire life, living in a log house on a corner of the farm with his maiden sister, Jane Lyle.
His bachelor cousin, John Lyle, son of the elder John Lyle, owned a part of his father's homestead, and these cousins, being neighbors and in similar circumstances, maintained a warm and intimate friendship during the greater part of their lives. They were not separated at their deaths, for they died at the same hour on the same day. A common funeral service was held for them in the Mt. Prospect Church.
