Civil War: he served three years and nine months in company B, 56th Pennsylvania volunteers, and was wounded in the thigh at North Anna, Virginia, and in the neck at Hatcher's run, Virginia.
He became one of the leading agriculturalists of Conemaugh township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, owning 180 acres of land, the old Nesbitt homestead, on which he carried on general farming and stock raising, specializing in the latter line. He held the office of county treasurer for one term of three years, during which time he lived at Indiana borough. His death occurred at his home in Saltsburg when he was seventy-two years old.
During the Civil war, he enlisted in Company C, 206th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served for four years. He had the misfortune to be wounded in the neck and thigh. Among the treasured possessions of his son, Robert Newton Nesbitt, was the coat of his father's uniform, which was riddled with holes made by bullets.
