He was a graduate of Ligonier High School and Wilkinsburg High School and also attended Indiana Normal School. He studied for one year at Carnegie Technical School, Pittsburgh, but was drafted as a clarinet player, member of the Third Infantry Band, stationed at Fort Hancock, Augusta, Georgia.
