General Notes: Husband - Samuel G. Purvis, Esq.

He was born May 8. [TCHBC, 1111]

He was reared in Susquehanna County, and afterward moved to Butler Borough, Butler County, where he followed the vocation of a carpenter.

Born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, he removed with his parents to Westmoreland County, and from thence in 1821 to Middlesex Township, Butler County. He remained on the farm with his parents until 1829, when he went to Pittsburgh and learned the carpenter's trade. In 1832, he came to Butler Borough, where he carried on a large and successful business as a contractor and builder. In 1869, he and two of his sons engaged in the lumber business, and started a planing mill. His large experience and wise judgment brought success, and the business soon grew to important dimensions. He continued actively engaged in this enterprise until his death. He was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace five times, and served seventeen years in that capacity. He resigned in order to give his whole attention to his business interests. He also held from time to time many local offices. As a citizen, he was public spirited and active in promoting educational and religious work. He was a prominent member of the United Presbyterian Church, and greatly devoted to its interests. He helped to organize the Butler County Mutual Fire Insurance Company; was chosen its first President, and held the office until his death. He also assisted in organizing the Butler Water Company, and was its President for several years. [HBC 1883, 170x]

The largest mechanical industry in Butler is the Purvis Planing-Mill. This was started in 1864 by S. G. Purvis, who carried it on until his death, since which time the business has been conducted by his sons, J. L. and L. O. Purvis, under the firm name of S. G. Purvis & Co. Until 1879, the patronage of the mill was principally from the surrounding country, but since then the proprietors have been engaged extensively in the manufacture of sash, doors and blinds, which find a market in Pittsburgh and vicinity. The Purvis Planing-Mill employs about fifty men, and annually uses up about three million feet of lumber. [HBC 1883, 154]

He resided on the farm with his parents until the age of twenty-three, and then went to Pittsburgh, PA, to learn the carpenter's trade. In 1832 he came to Butler, PA, where he continued to work at his trade for two years, a part of the time in the construction of the Presbyterian church. About 1834 he commenced contracting and building, and continued the same until 1867, in which year the firm of S. G. Purvis & Company was formed, his son, Joseph L., becoming a partner. In 1869 they embarked in the planing mill and lumber business, which they carried on in connection with contracting and building. They abandoned the latter line of trade in 1878, but continued the lumber and planing mill business, which grew from small beginnings into one of the leading manufacturing institutions of Butler County. In 1876 Levi O. was taken into the business, which carried on, under the old firm name, by Joseph L. and Levi O. Purvis. Mr. Purvis was a stanch Democrat, served upon the school board, and filled the office of justice of the peace for six-teen years. He was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian church of Butler, and an elder and trustee in that organization for many years. He was prominent in public matters and always took a commendable interest in the growth and progress of his adopted home. He was at one time the owner of the Democratic Herald, and one of the original stockholders in the Butler and Alle-gheny Plank Road Company. He was one of the projectors and first president of the Butler Water Company, and was also president of the Butler Mutual In-surance Company from its organization until his death. [HBC 1895, 728]
