General Notes: Husband - William Henry Landenberger

He was born near the city of Wiltenburg, Germany, and was educated in his native province and learned the trade of stonemason, working principally on bridge construction, continuing until 1853, when he emigrated to the United States, settling with his brothers and a sister in Akron, Ohio. He secured employment at his trade with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, working on the bridge and culverts along the railroad lines. In the course of his employment he came to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he built the bridge of Laurel Run. While working there he made many friends among the residents of that section and resolved to make his home with them. He had an imperfect knowledge of the English language, which he remedied by attending the district school for one year, studying English. He then became clerk in a general store for Lewis Snyder in Tyrone township, Fayette County. In 1857 he married and shortly afterward answered President Lincoln's last call for troops, serving the last six months of the Civil War, receiving an honorable discharge. He then returned to Fayette County and resumed his trade of stonemason, continuing all his active years. He prospered, owned several farms, but cultivated them with hired labor, while he continued his trade operations. He built melting furnaces for the glass works at Belle Vernon, Brownsville and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Buffalo and other points in New York state, in other parts of the United States and in Canada. Although away a great deal he always made his home on his Lower Tyrone township farm. He was a well-known contractor and builder of every kind of stone construction. He was a Democrat and served as school director. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a liberal supporter of church benevolences.
