General Notes: Husband - William Merkle
He attended the schools of his native land, and in early life accompanied his parents to America, devoting a number of years thereafter to the cultivation of the farm. In 1864 he entered the employ of the Economy Oil Company, being promoted to the high position of superintendent as a reward for faithful and efficient service, and he remained with the company until 1893, the year in which the business was sold. He then embarked in the oil business on his own account, and also conducted farming operations. In 1908 he sold his oil lease, and the following year moved to Tidioute. He was a member of the Lutheran church; and a member of Temple Lodge, No. 412, Free and Accepted Masons, of which he was a past master; and of Temple Chapter, No. 32, Royal Arch Masons, of Erie, Pennsylvania; and of Warren Commandery, No. 63, Knights Templar.
