He was born in York County, Pennsylvania. He came to Sinking Valley, Huntingdon County in 1836. From there went to Warrior's Mark in 1844 or 1845, where he was apprenticed to Peter Burket and learned the tanner's trade. He moved to Altoona in 1852.
