He was educated in the public schools of Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a clerk in the office of R. A. O. Kerr & Co., insurange agents, Altoona, 1869 to 1873; was then two years with the Western Union Telegraph Co., and after that for six years was night clerk in the Logan House, Altoona. After 1881 he was employed as a clerk in the offices of the P. R. R. Co. at Altoona. He was a member of the First M. E. Church and a trustee of that church.
