General Notes: Husband - Archibald D. Newell

He was born in Mahoningtown, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and was reared in his native borough, securing a practical education in the schools of Mahoningtown, and in the private schools of New Castle. This foundation was supplemented with a course in the New Castle Business College. At an early age he took his place behind the counter in his father's store, and upon the latter's retirement from business, he became one of the firm of Newell Bros., which succeeded to the former firm. He did not long retain his interest in the store, but sold out, and took a trip to Colorado for his health, from which place he returned to Pennsylvania after several months "roughing it" on a hunting expedition. He then became a clerk in the store of his uncle, J. D. Frisbee, at Connellsville, where he remained six years. On his return to Mahoningtown at the expiration of his stay in Connellsville, he was employed a few months in the offices of the Pennsylvania Co. at Lawrence Junction. On July 12, 1893, he was appointed postmaster of Mahoningtown. Politically, he was a stanch and loyal Democrat, and socially was a member of the Knights of Pythias, and advanced to the Uniformed Rank.

In 1883 his brother, J. D. F. Newell, died and Mr. Newell took charge of the business. It was reorganized, with I. R. Zaniser as a partner, and was conducted under the firm style of A. D. Newell & Company. [But BOBLC, 72, published in 1897 has his brother still alive at that time.]
He was a Democrat. He was postmaster at Mahoningtown during the second administration of President Cleveland. In the spring of 1908 he was elected a member of the Select Council. He was the first man appointed chief of the fire department of Mahoningtown. Mr. Newell was a Knight Templar Mason.
