General Notes: Husband - Franklin J. Schoch
He was reared at the old family homestead in Middle Creek township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania. He attended the subscription schools of that day, the rough log building with its rude seats and bare walls being fairly symbolical of the old-fashioned methods of instruction then in vogue. Under the influence of his parents, however, he acquired a practical education notwithstanding the lack of suitable privileges, and at an early age he became a clerk in a store. There he familiarized himself with all the details of mercantile life, and in 1853 he engaged in a similar business on his own account at Selins Grove, meeting with remarkable success. He also became interested in milling, and continued both lines until 1884, when, having accumulated a large fortune, he retired.
In politics he was a strong Republican; in religious faith he was a Lutheran. He was identified with various social movements, and for years was a member of the Masonic Order, Lafayette Lodge, No. 194, of Selins Grove.
