He resided in Allegheny Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, for some years. Around 1875, Simon Peter, Esther, and all of their children, except Josiah and Lavina, moved to Mercer County, Missouri. He continued to operate a sawmill there as he had done in Pennsylvania, the one in Missouri being located at Mill Grove.
After the death of his first wife, he moved to Wright County, Missouri, where his son, Jacob Henry, lived.
