She was born in Arkansas and moved to Mercer County, Missouri, at the age of two years after her father was killed in Arkansas by a band of renegades roaming the country and stealing anything of value. Shortly after his death a regiment of Union soldiers camped nearby. When they heard what had happened, they helped Ellen, her brother, and four sisters, none grown, and their mother to the Mississippi River, where they took a riverboat to St. Louis. From there the family traveled with overland freighters in freight wagons to Princeton, Missouri.
