He was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Manheim, where [his father] settled on his arrival from Switzerland. The family as far back as can be traced were members of the Mennonite Church. [HFC 1887, 781]

He was a Mennonite who emigrated to America from Switzerland in 1727, and settled near Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
