General Notes: Husband - Lawrence O. Markel
He was nine years of age when his parents located in Evans City, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and he was there educated in the public schools and in John Tinstman's Academy. At the age of sixteen years he entered the office of Edward Dambach, who conducted a lumber company at Evans City, and continued for ten years, after which he represented the Hastings Lumber Company of Pittsburgh as traveling representative for a short time. He then returned to Evans City and became a stockholder in the Burry and Markel Company, in the affairs of which concern he then took an active part. He became secretary and treasurer upon the death of his father, and Mr. Burry became president. He was an ardent Democrat in his political belief. Fraternally, he was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 429, F. & A. M. at Zelienople. In religious faith and fellowship, he was a member of the Reformed Church. [TCHBC, 1171]
