He was a farmer in his native township, owning a farm of one hundred and twenty acres. During the Civil War he served one year in Company K, [Two Hundred and] Eleventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and on the expiration of his time was honorably discharged. Like his father he was an elder in the Presbyterian church.
