His elementary education was acquired in the public schools, and he then took a business course in the Iron City College. His entrance into business life was as a bookkeeper for the William Fleming Company, with which he remained two years, when ill health obliged him to return to the farm in order to have the benefit of an outdoor life. After his marriage he settled on a farm of seventy-three acres in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in general farming. His political affiliation was with the Republican party, and he filled a number of public offices, among them: School director, twenty-two years; auditor; assessor, twenty-eight years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Allison Park.
