He attended the public school until fourteen years of age, and continued on the farm as his father's assistant until he was of legal age. After his marriage he moved to South Union township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he leased a farm of between four and five hundred acres for a period of ten years. In 1901 he moved to Uniontown and established a meat market at the corner of South and Beeson streets. After one year there he moved to a location at No. 7 Morgantown street, where he established a grocery and meat business. He was a Democrat in politics and for three years was a member of the city council. He, with his family, was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church of Uniontown.
