He was born and raised in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He received the preliminary portion of his education in the local public schools and was later a student at a Medical College, Jefferson, Maryland, from which he graduated in the year 1871 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He then returned to Pennsylvania and established himself in practice at Connellsville, Westmoreland County, where he was regarded as one of the leading physicians during the remainder of his life. He was retained as surgeon by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad for many years and established a very high record in this capacity.
