He attended the district schools in his boyhood and when eighteen years of age started to learn the carpenter trade and continued to work at that trade for many years. His father had conducted a cooper shop. Beginning in 1880 he was elected to office by his fellow citizens, serving fully thirty years as constable, assessor and tax collector, also as road supervisor.
