General Notes: Husband - Dr. Robert Mendenhall Huston
When he was ten years of age his parents removed to Pennsylvania and settled in Chester County, where he attended the neighborhood schools. At an early age he obtained a position at a druggist's in Philadelphia, and here began reading medicine; he subsequently completed his professional studies in a medical college, and graduated with his degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1812 he was drafted for military service, and was appointed assistant surgeon in the army, although he was but seventeen years of age. After the close of the war he located in Philadelphia, where he entered upon a successful career in the practice of his profession and also as a teacher of medicine. He became professor of materia medica in the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, and was for some time dean, in both positions aiding greatly in the development of the institution. He was also prominent in public affairs, and served as a member of the city council and in other useful positions. He continued in the practice of his profession until his death. His widow survived him many years, dying at the remarkable age of ninety-seven years and some days.
