He remained at home until seventeen years of age, in the meantime acquiring his education in the public schools. He then left home and began work in the shops of the George Westinghouse Company in Pittsburgh, where he remained for two years. He then began working for the Kelly and Jones Manufacturing Company, in Greensburg, where he spent only a short time, however, and then entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, in the capacity of fireman. In the autumn of 1899 he was promoted to the position of engineer, running on the Pittsburgh division.
He was well known locally in fraternal circles. He belonged to General Putnam Lodge, No. 125, J. O. U. A. M., of Pittsburgh; General Putnam Council, No. 28, D. L., of Pittsburgh; Youngwood Lodge, No. 667, I. O. O. F.; and J. M. Guffey Division, No. 454, B. L. E. He was a Republican in politics and in February, 1903, was elected a member of the borough council of Youngwood and was its first president. He held membership in the Lutheran church, in which he served as deacon.
