General Notes: Husband - Alexander Murdoch, Jr.

He practiced law with his brother-in-law, J. L. Gow.

He took an early interest in the study of law and in due time became one of the leading members of the bar in Washington, Pennsylvania, establishing his home there, where he became one of the most active promoters of the development of that city, for a number of years president of the First National Bank and in other ways identified with the commercial and industrial life of the community as well as with its professional and civic life. Reared a whig, he became an ardent republican upon the formation of this latter party and was a delegate from this district to the historic convention of the party which in 1860 at the old "wigwam" in Chicago nominated Abraham Lincoln for the presidency. In April, 1861, a month after he had become chief executive of the nation, Mr. Lincoln appointed Alexander Murdoch to the position of United States marshal for the western district of Pennsylvania, and in that difficult and trying office he rendered invaluable service to the nation during the time of the Civil War. In March, 1869, he was reappointed to this office by President Grant and continued to serve as district marshal until his resignation in 1872. He continued to be active in local promotion and other good works until his retirement from active service and his last days were spent in Washington.
