General Notes: Husband - John M. Howard
He was educated in the public schools of Hagerstown, Maryland, and after completing his studies there entered Lehigh University at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, taking up the course in mechanical engineering, graduating with the class of 1887. In September, 1888, he moved to Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, which became his home and the scene of his business activities. Upon first coming to Latrobe, Mr. Howard secured a position as draftsman with the newly organized Latrobe Steel Company and served in that capacity for one year, being then promoted to the position of assistant fireman of forges. In 1904 he was promoted to the position of assistant superintendent of the plant, and in 1910 was made superintendent. He had other business and financial interests, also, and was a stockholder and director of the First National Bank of Latrobe. He was a member of the Latrobe Club, the Greensburg Country Club, the Presbyterian church, a member of its board of trustees, and was the president of the Latrobe Hospital Association. He was a devotee and patron of all out-door sports, and during his college days played halfback on the "Varsity" team at Lehigh University.
