When a small boy he came with his parents to the farm in Smith township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. After the death of his father, he had charge of the place, which he managed with marked success, and was considered one of the leading young business men of the community. Like his father, he was a Democrat in politics, and in religion was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Midway.
