General Notes: Husband - William James
He was a boy of sixteen when he came from his native Ireland to the United States, and locating in Butler County, Pennsylvania, he learned the blacksmith’s trade there and followed that line of work as a journeyman until the year of 1858. In that year he came to Mercer County, and locating in New Vernon Township he opened a blacksmith shop with a partner, but after two years he took over his partner’s interest and continued there at that same location for twenty-five years. After that long period he sold his shop in 1882 and bought the farm on which he spent the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was an active worker in the interests of the Republican Party, which he represented in all of the township offices and he was also a school director and for many years the town clerk. During the war between the north and the south he enlisted in the Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Stinson, for three months. He took part in the pursuit of Morgan in Ohio and later was sent to Parkersburg, Virginia. He was honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service.
