General Notes: Husband - Lyman H. Hillis

Greensburg, Westmoreland Co, PA - a grocer

He passed the years of his childhood and early youth in his native place, and gained his education at the local schools. At the age of seventeen years he began to teach in those local schools where he himself had been a pupil. He followed this profession for a period of some ten years, and then, in 1889, was elected superintendent of the county home, thus beginning a long association with that institution, spanning five terms at various times. His first term was served at the time when he and his young bride were first married, and the two young people went in and took charge of the home and at once established themselves in the affection of all those who dwelt there. Mrs. Hillis had the honor of being the youngest matron who ever served in that capacity at the home. Mr. Hillis also served as deputy register of wills under Robert Rankin. He purchased the third house erected in South West Greensburg, and occupied it until the time of his death. While Mr. Hillis was a very religious man, he was not formally identified with any church, but believed that all of them were doing good in the community and was energetic in his support of the general religious life of the community. He taught Sunday school at the Baptist church for some ten years. He was a member of Greensburg Lodge, No. 840, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, for thirty years and held all the various offices connected with that fraternity in Greensburg. In politics he was a staunch Republican.
