General Notes: Husband - Alexander Love

He was the progenitor of this Love family in America, having come as a young man from his native Ireland. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and after residing in that country during his childhood and early youth, he came to the United States in the year 1807. He was married in Ireland and they were the parents of one child before their migration to the United States. The voyage was made by sailing vessel, and required fourteen weeks in all to make the voyage. They landed in Philadelphia and at once set out on another kind of journey which, if not so long, was at least as perilous. This was the journey over the mountains to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, which was at that time little more than a wilderness. He settled with his little family in Fairfield township, where he bought property from James Lawson, the deed being dated September 25, 1817, and the property consisted of three hundred and eighty-six acres of, at that time, very imperfectly cleared land. He sold this property less than a year later, on May 4, 1818, to Samuel Guthrie, and removed to Wheatfield township, Indiana County, where he operated a farm until 1821. On April 4, 1821, he once more purchased the old homestead and lived there and operated it as a farm until 1854. On May 8, 1854, having built a substantial dwelling, he sold the property to his three sons, Joseph C., James R., and William M. Later Joseph C. Love sold his interest to his two brothers. William M. held the part which is now the present homestead and which included a tract of one hundred and thirty-two acres; and James R. took that part which is located on the hill and which included two hundred and fifty-four acres. Alexander Love died at the old home at the age of seventy-seven years. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Presbyterian church.
