General Notes: Husband - Jacob Hassler

He was reared near St. Thomas, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed in connection with cabinet-making during life.
He was an energetic man, a good mechanic, and built many of the largest houses in Mercersburg. He and his wife were members of the Reformed Church, in which he was an active elder. To his church he was liberal, and was one of the four men who gave $500 each in raising the $10,000 pledged by the town toward the erection of the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church, at Mercersburg, in 1835.

"At the period of his marriage Father was a strong, vigorous, active, healthy young man busilly engaged in the carpenter trade, having 15 to 20 mechanics and apprentices and others employed at one time. Mother was stout, strong, heavy set, with black hair, rosy cheeks - a beautiful young woman and a full Kieffer; full of life, strength, and courage, cheer and hope - a helpmeet indeed. She was suited to aid and comfort one of such vast business interests and engagements. Father in his trade built nearly one half the houses in Mercersburg...
At this time our Father enjoyed, generally speaking, good health; but by exposure to all kinds of weather in his long rides on horseback in search of lumber and other materials for his building (his contracts for new houses extended in Maryland as far as the Potomac River, and far into Virginia. In this way he brought on a pulmonary affection which ended in death at an early period, July 29, 1848, age 60 years 2 months and eleven days. Thus passed away a good man, a most usefull and industrious citizens, an indulgent parent, a kind neighbor, a Ruling Elder in the Church, highly esteemed in the community for his liberality and uprightness of life. In settling up his state we found many subscriptions which he had given for the church and pastor's salary, and his name was always among the highest on the list. He was one of the few who gave $500 for the raising of $10,000, for the purpose of locating the Theological Seminary at Mercersburg. Well do we remember the time of this donation, as no one thought it too much for father's limited means. But the cause was a good one and we believe God has blessed the gift. Our father was a man of prayer; had family worship, prayer at the table, a strict believer in the keeping of the Sabbath, and of keeping his boys home at night. He was a good singer, and often made his sons act as sexton for the church, but with no pay or compensation. His house was the ministers' home. Ministers often remained for weeks at a time under his roof (no pay) when they came to hold communion service (see published incident of Jacob and Peter and Rev. Diefenbacher). In his character, life and death are fulfilled the words of David in Psalm 92: 12-15, "The righteous shall fulfill, etc." - The Hassler Family
