General Notes: Husband - James Hartford

He and his wife were born in Ireland, of Scotch descent, and were among the very first settlers in Hanover township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, locating on what became known as the McClung farm, later owned by Joseph Cooley. [HBC 1888, 852]

He probably came from Ireland, and was one of the very first settlers in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. They settled in what became Hanover township, Beaver County, before the present division of the counties had gone into effect. This was prior to the defeat of Braddock, and they were driven away from their home by the French and Indians. Three years later, when the Indians were not so frequently to be met with in that locality, they returned, and spent the remainder of their lives there. The log house in which they lived was considered the finest and best in the entire community. Mr. Hartford was small of stature.
