General Notes: Husband - Barnabas Horton
The account of the Horton family is based on data from "Early Hortons of Westchester County, New York," by E. S. Jones, published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 36, pp. 38-46, 104--144, and from the "Ancestors and Descendants of Isaac Horton," by Byron B. Horton, published in 1912.
He emigrated to America before 1640, and settled at Hampton, New Hampshire. About 1651 he removed to Southold, New York, and resided there until his death. He held many public offices, among them deputy to the general court of the New Haven colony in 1654-56-58-59-61; in 1663-64 he was a commissioner for Southold.
He was born in Mousely, Leicestershire, England, and came to America as early as 1638. He possessed ample means, and settled for a time at New Haven, Connecticut. In 1640 he and twelve others organized themselves into a Congregational Church, assisted by the Rev. John Davenport and Governor Eaton. They then sailed to the eastern end of Long Island with their families and founded the town of Southold. All of these early settlers had been members of Puritan churches in England. He became one of the influential men of Southold: he was for many years a magistrate, and was several times elected to the General Court at New Haven and Hartford.
Another source gives his date of birth as July 13, 1600. But the same month and day is given also for his date of death. One wonders if there has been some confusion here.
