General Notes: Husband - William Hays

He was a native of Ireland and was reared there, being a youth of sixteen when he came to America with his parents. The family located on a farm in Madison township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where his father followed agricultural pursuits and ran a distillery.
Soon after his marriage he settled in Washington township, Armstrong County, on a tract of 120 acres which he cultivated, also running a sawmill. He was elected to various township offices, serving as supervisor and school director. But his chief official honor was his election to the position of county auditor, which he held from 1888 to 1893. For many years he was a leading worker for the success of the Republican party in his section. Mr. Hays was a veteran of the Civil war, serving three years as a member of Company E, 62d Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, from Clarion County, and was once slightly wounded. Among the engagements in which he took part was the battle of Gettysburg.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church.

He was born in County Donegal, Ireland, and came to America with his parents when sixteen years of age, and immediately took a position with the American Furnace Co., at Rimerton, Pennsylvania. In July, 1861, he enlisted in the army with Co. E, 62d Reg., Penn. Vol., and served three years. He was in the battle of Gettysburg and the other battles fought by his regiment. On his return from the war he married Catharine John and bought the homestead of her grandfather, Peter John, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was twice elected auditor of Armstrong County; was a member of the John Foster G. A. R. Post; Activity Lodge of I. O. O. F., and Grange No. 593, P. of H.

General Notes: Wife - Catherine John

After the death of her husband, she resided in East Franklin township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, having moved there in November, 1909.
