He was born at Wellsville, Ohio, and graduated from Franklin College in 1861 and from the Allegheny Seminary; was ordained to the United Presbyterian ministry in 1865; was pastor of Sewickley congregation, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, for six years and for twenty-five years of the Old White Church at Salem, Washington County, New York.
