General Notes: Husband - Dr. Absalom W. H. Hawkins
He was graduated from Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, in the class of 1858, read medicine, graduating at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in the spring of 1861; was appointed by President Lincoln an assistant surgeon of the U. S. navy in May of 1861; in 1863 he was promoted past assistant, and in 1864 full surgeon; he was a ripe scholar, speaking and writing fluently, in addition to the English, the French, German and Spanish languages. On account of failing health he resigned from the navy in 1866, and was killed by the cars at Mansfield, Ohio.
