He was born and educated in the Ligonier valley, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and he inherited his father's property at the time of his death. He was a farmer during his entire life and was a Democrat in politics. He was a member of the Christian church at Laughlinstown, of which he was an elder for many years.
His death occurred at the age of sixty-one years.

He was a soldier of the Civil War.
