General Notes: Husband - John Braden Sweeney
He received his education in the common schools of Ligonier township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Until the age of seventeen he was employed by neighboring farmers, but then he enrolled himself among the defenders of the Union. Enlisting from Westmoreland County he was mustered in, on March 16, 1864, at Harrisburg, for the duration of the Civil War. As a member of Company E, Eleventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Captains H. B. Piper and Joseph Briggs, Colonel Richard Coulter. He was assigned to the First, Third and Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac, and participated in the following battles: Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 8-18; North Anna, May 23; Cold Harbor, June 1-12; Bethesda Church, June 6; Front of Petersburg, June 15-30; Weldon Railroad, August 22; Hickford Raid, December 1; Hatcher's Run, February 5-7, 1865; Dabney's Mills, February 7; Quaker Road, March 28; White Oak Ridge, March 30; Five Forks, April 1; and Appomattox, April 9. Mr. Sweeney was among those who witnessed General Lee's surrender. On May 17, 1865, he was promoted to the rank of corporal, and on July 1 of the same year received an honorable discharge.
Returning to Ligonier township, Mr. Sweeney worked one year on the Hugh Lytle farm and was then employed for five years on the Maria Smith farm. After spending one summer in Youngstown, Ohio, he returned to the Ligonier Valley and for some years carried on farming as a renter, ultimately purchasing the Hartman farm in Fairfield township. Later he sold this estate and for a time rented another farm, afterward purchasing sixty acres on which he thereafter made his home. He cultivated it, doing general farming until about 1917, when he relinquished the activities of a successful agriculturist. His farm was purchased in 1889 from John Hauger.
In politics Mr. Sweeney was a true Republican and at one time, in response to the call of his fellow-citizens, served as supervisor. He belonged to Fort Ligonier Post, No. 324, Grand Army of the Republic. On the rolls of the old Fort Palmer United Presbyterian Church the name of John Braden Sweeney headed the list of members and his eldership was coequal with his membership, he having been placed in that office when he united with the church.
