His paternal grandfather came from England under King's orders to survey the State of Maryland. He brought his wife, family and large retinue of servants. He accomplished his work and decided to remain; he therefore settled in Maryland and passed the remainder of his life there.

He was a prominent merchant at Freeport, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and served with distinction in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and of the Republican party.
