General Notes: Husband - William Brett Hammond

He received his preparatory education in the public schools of his native town, afterward attending the Indiana State Normal School and Eastman National Business College, Poughkeepsie, New York. He became treasurer of the William B. Hammond Company, which succeeded to the business of William McClure Hammond, his father. He was a director in the Rennie Electric Drill Machinery Company, of Bolivar, and also in the Bolivar National Bank. Beginning in 1902 he held the office of school director. He was identified with the Republican party, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he served as trustee.

His education, begun in the Bolivar public schools, was continued at Indiana State Normal School and completed with a commercial course at Eastman's Business College at Poughkeepsie, New York, whence he was graduated, class of 1895. He began his business career as a bookkeeper in the general store of William McClure Hammond, so continuing in name, but in fact his father's trusted assistant until 1902, when he succeeded to the management of the business upon the death of his honored father. He continued head of the business for some time, then admitted Thomas M. Gilpin to a partnership, the firm reorganizing as W. B. Hammond & Company. The company maintained a large and well stocked store at Bolivar, their principal lines, dry goods, clothing and footwear. Mr. Hammond was also a director of the Bolivar National Bank, and beginning in 1908 was its president. He had other business interests as well and was also interested in real estate. A Republican in politics, he served Bolivar as a councilman, and beginning in 1902 as school director, later treasurer of the board. He was a member of Cambria Lodge, No. 278, Free and Accepted Masons; Portage Chapter, No. 195, Royal Arch Masons; Cambria Council, No. 32, Royal and Select Masters; and Oriental Commandery, No. 61, Knights Templar; and all Johnstown Masonic bodies. In the Scottish Rite he attained the thirty-second degree, Pittsburgh Consistory, and was a Noble of Jaffa Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was a past regent of Bolivar Council, No. 2071, Royal Arcanum; member of Speer Orr Camp, No. 14, Sons of Veterans, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania; member of the Pennsylvania Society of New York; a trustee and treasurer of the Bolivar Methodist Episcopal Church.
