General Notes: Husband - Michael J. Lohr
He was born in Cremahoning township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and attended the schools of Jenner township. In addition to assisting his father in the management of the farm, he worked as a sawyer in the timber lands until within two months of his twentieth birthday. On September 4, 1861, Mr. Lohr enlisted in Company C, Fifty-fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, for three years, and reenlisted at the end of that period for the duration of the war. He was mustered in at Harrisburg and served under Captain Youtcy and Colonel Jacob M. Campbell, and later under Colonel John P. Moulton, being assigned successively to the armies of West Virginia, the Shenandoah, the James and the Potomac. In the Shenandoah Valley he was in the Eighth Army Corps. Among the important battles in which Mr. Lohr participated were those of Cedar Creek, where he was captured but escaped and rejoined his command a few hours later, Newmarket, Lynchburg, Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. Four days before the surrender of General Lee he was taken prisoner at High Bridge, Virginia, and was sent to Annapolis, Maryland, where he was discharged on May 30, 1865, having seen, in all, nearly four years of military service.
On his return to Jenner township Mr. Lohr engaged in agricultural pursuits and also followed the trade of a stone mason. Later he rented a farm for nine years, and eventually purchased an estate of forty-two acres in Ligonier township, Westmoreland County. After cultivating this land for a short time he sold it and moved to Ligonier, where he worked for eight years as a stone mason and contractor. Subsequently, for about three years, he was associated in business with his sons, Harry S. and James Garfield, under the firm name of the Lohr Lumber Company.
In politics Mr. Lohr was a Republican, and during his residence in Ligonier served one term as tax collector. He and his wife were members of St. James' Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ligonier.
He came to Westmoreland County in 1869.
