General Notes: Husband - David Hayes
After leaving the public schools, for three years he was a student at Westminster College, after which he taught school for awhile. Turning his attention then to agricultural pursuits, his father having given him fifty acres of land in Lackawannock Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in the little log cabin standing on the farm, he and his bride began housekeeping. He labored with industry and enterprise in his efforts to clear and improve the land, continuing farming until 1862, when, in response to his country's call, he enlisted in Company D, One Hundredth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. With his comrades he went to the front, and, with the exception of a short time when he was ill, took an active part in all the battles, marches and campaigns in which his regiment participated until one day when he was shot by the enemy while doing picket duty.
General Notes: Wife - Margaret Watson
Reared to habits of industry and thrift, she assisted her mother in the care of the household, acquiring a thorough knowledge of the domestic arts and sciences. She learned to card, spin and weave, helping to make the household linen and the homespun in which the family was clothed.
She was left a widow, with four small children, but proved herself equal to the occasion, in the management of the home farm, showing excellent judgment and great executive ability. She reared her children to habits of economy, gave them good educational advantages, paid off the indebtedness on the estate, erected a substantial set of frame buildings, and finally, in the declining years of her life, enjoyed all the comforts of a well-furnished and comfortable home.
