He was reared in Centre County, Pennsylvania, but removed to Clearfield County where he purchased and operated a farm and mill in Jordan township.

He and his wife were born and reared in Centre County, Pennsylvania, and after their marriage lived there until after the birth of three children. They then moved to Jordan Township, near Ansonville, Clearfield County, where he acquired a farm of more than 200 acres. His death occurred there when he was but forty-two years of age.
