General Notes: Husband - William R. Snyder

He was born in Fairfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and there received his education in the West school house. Until the age of seventeen he assisted his father in the management of the home farm. During the Civil War so great was his desire to serve his country in the field that he made no fewer than five trips to Greensburg for the purpose of enlisting, but was refused every time on the ground that he was both under size and under age. In 1864 he was accepted as a substitute for James Graham, who had been drafted, and in this capacity he served until the close of the war. On his return home Mr. Snyder was employed as freight brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad, running from Derry to Altoona, and after serving one year was severely injured while making a coupling. During the remainder of his life he was successively employed on the railroad as track laborer and watchman.
Mr. Snyder was a Republican and took an active part in local politics, filling for twenty years the office of constable, and also serving as councilman and tax collector in Bolivar. He was at one time the candidate of his party for the State Legislature, but was defeated at the polls. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Bolivar.
