His mother was a Wallace, of Sir William Wallace's clan. [CBRCP-CCJC, 1106]

He migrated from the north of Ireland to America in 1783. In 1794, the family located near Derry, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, traveling from Cumberland County on horseback. In 1796, the family removed to a farm in Blacklick township, Indiana County.
