General Notes: Husband - John M. Gehr

He was born on a farm near Alverton, East Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and during his boyhood lived much of the time with his maternal grandparents, attending school at Kecks and New Stanton. At the age of fourteen he returned to his father's farm, east of Greensburg, where he remained until his marriage, when he was twenty-eight years old. Abandoning for a time the life of a farmer, Mr. Gehr found employment on the Southwestern Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he worked for four years. After holding a position for eighteen months in the factory of Kelly & Jones, he returned to agricultural pursuits, and devoted seven years to the cultivation of the farm of Samuel Long. About 1896 Mr. Gehr purchased a farm of ninety-five acres in Unity township, but four years later returned to Greensburg. He had, meanwhile, bought a farm near Crabtree, and in 1902 he took up his abode there. After devoting himself assiduously to its cultivation and improvement for a period of twelve years, he resigned its management to his son and retired to New Alexandria, where he then resided. The estate was originally called the "Donohue farm" and consisted of one hundred and fifty-seven acres. The house, which was built about 1858 by a Mr. Hershey, was furnished with modern conveniences, including furnace and electric light. The barn was erected in 1896. Much was done to render the soil more fertile and thus to increase production.
In politics Mr. Gehr was a Democrat, but never consented to fill any public office with the exception of that of member of the school board, in which he served for several years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and for three years filled the office of elder.
