He was married in 1794 and about 1795 the family moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and in 1808 to Venango County.

He was a pioneer settler of Beaver township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

In 1819 Jacob and Anna traveled to Lake Erie, where both contracted smallpox, and where both died.
According to The Smail Family, published by Eunice Foore, one of their descendants, they may have died while on a visit to Elyria, Ohio, to visit their daughter, Elizabeth, and grandson, Jacob.
