He was reared in Hanover township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the common schools. Early in life he was clerk in his father's store, and then embarked in that business for himself. He bought and sold many stores, and also dealt extensively in real estate; he succeeded well in business. In politics he was a Democrat and he was a Master Mason.
