He was a ship carpenter, which trade he followed for a number of years, after which he was a captain on the Ohio river for thirty-five years, and lived nearly all his life in Birmingham, later known as South Side, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He and his wife had three sons and four daughters, of whom Samuel was the second son.
