After completing his high school course he prepared in other schools, entered Lehigh University, later was a student at the School of Mines, Michigan University. After leaving college he spent two years in Michigan mines, after which he was interested in an irrigating project. He then entered the service of McAndrews & Forbes, importers of liquids used in tobacco manufacture, supervised the erection of plants and the installation of machinery, also acting as purchasing agent. Later he was located in Philadelphia with the same company.
