General Notes: Husband - John McKenzie

He built a mill on Sugar creek two miles below Cooperstown in 1846. [HVC 1890, 645]
He built a house in Cooperstown and kept the first hotel there. [HVC 1890, 692]

He moved with his parents to the farm where Foutstown was located. He received a good education. Though fond of books, he inclined to work in wood, and his father indulged him in his inclination by permitting him or rather urging him, in company with his brother, Alexander, to cut and haul logs from the lower farm to the mill on the home farm, which proved quite a task, and did not altogether come up to John's idea of working in wood. So he formed the idea of running off, and revealed the same as a secret to his mother and brother. He left home with the design of earning enough in the upper timber country to build a barn, and thus save hard labor in hauling logs. Suffice it to say he returned in the spring with sufficient lumber to build the barn, and fifty dollars in his pocket.
In 1827 he left home to learn the carpenter trade and mill-wrighting, with Hosea Southwick, of New York. He learned his trade rapidly, and followed it extensively for more than thirty years, and, in addition, carried on farming, with numerous employes.
He may have built more houses, barns, mills, and other buildings, and shot more wild turkeys and deer, than any other man in Venango county. He traveled over fourteen different States. He was married in 1828 and bought a farm in 1830, above Cooperstown, on which he built a house and barn, and cleared about forty acres. He then built a house and barn in Cooperstown. He then bought 130 acres, four and a half miles above Cooperstown, on which he built a grist and saw mill, cleared thirty acres, and remained there two years. He then moved to another farm in 1842. It was purchased by his father and given to him. About 150 acres was prairie land. The whole farm contained 300 acres. [HVC 1879, 649]

He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and was quite young when the family settled in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County. Showing a fondness for books, he was allowed very good educational privileges for the time, and his early preference in the matter of occupation was for working in wood. His father sought to make practical use of the inclination by setting him and his brother Alexander to cut and haul logs from the lower farm to the mill on the home place, but the work was distasteful to him, and he decided to leave home and seek employment in the upper timber country, in order to earn enough to build a barn without the labor of hauling the logs. When he returned in the spring he had enough lumber for the purpose and fifty dollars in money. In 1827 he went to learn carpentry and millwrighting with Hosea Southwick, of New York, and with the practical knowledge he had previously acquired advanced rapidly in those trades, for which he had much aptitude, as his subsequent activities showed. He continued to follow those lines for thirty years, and meanwhile also engaged in farming and milling, employing a number of men. In 1830 he bought a farm above Cooperstown, Venango County, where he built a house and barn and cleared about forty acres, afterward putting up a house and barn in Cooperstown. Then he bought 130 acres four and a half miles above that place, whereon he remained two years, during which time he erected a grist and saw mill and cleared thirty acres of the property. In 1842 he removed thence to the large farm in Sugar Creek Township where the rest of his life was spent, a tract of three hundred acres which his father had purchased and given to him, and about half of which was prairie land. He traveled over fourteen different States and had a varied and interesting life. He served as a justice of the peace, and kept in touch with different interests to the end of his days. [CAB, 717]
